NYC Housing Court Glossary

Stipulation

Plain EnglishA deal you make with the landlord — read it before you sign

Legal Definition

A written agreement signed by both parties, usually in the courthouse hallway, that resolves the case. It may include payment plans, repair agreements, or move-out dates.

💡
Practical Tip

Never sign a stipulation in the hallway without reading every word. They're binding contracts. If you don't understand something, ask a Help Center attorney first.
